The hottest new artists talk to SALT, ahead of the Brighton multi-venue festival

SALT Staff Writer

An emerging alternative/indie pop artist from Brighton, Finnian James made a striking debut in 2024 with his single, Roses. His music is characterized by his unique, original voice and passionate, emotive delivery. Drawing inspiration from the eclectic sounds of Bleachers, Medium Build, and the legendary Jeff Buckley, Finnian James delivers a unique blend of 80s synths and drums, combined with a fresh, modern feel that sets him apart in today’s music scene.

As this magical solo artist prepares to cast a spell at Brighton’s The Great Escape, we grabbed them for 12 burning questions...

Welcome to The Great Escape 2025! How does it feel to be part of a festival known for launching new talent?

Thank you so much!! It feels honestly amazing, I played the festival a couple years back but my music is grown and changed so much since then, I can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been up to. Brighton is my hometown and I couldn’t be prouder to be playing!

For people discovering you for the first time here in Brighton, how would you describe your sound in three words?

Hmmm… Anthemic, Introspective, Honest

What’s the journey been like getting to this point — playing a showcase in front of new fans, press, and industry folk?

The journey has been long, tiring, difficult, as the music scene is. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Do you approach a showcase festival like this differently from a typical gig or headline show?

No, I want to perform to the best of my ability no matter who’s in the crowd.

The Great Escape is packed with new sounds and fresh faces — Will you have a chance to discover any other artists at TGE, or any that you want to see?

Yesss I’m going to be at as many shows as I possibly can over the weekend. So many amazing artists are playing.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given as an emerging artist in today’s music scene?

Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks, make the music you want to make, perform the way you want to perform, be real.

Brighton has a buzzing creative vibe — have you explored the city before or been inspired by it in any way?

I’ve lived in Brighton for around 6 years, I think I’ve explored every inch of it. It doesn’t get old though.

What’s one thing about your live performance that people might not expect until they see you on stage?

Well, I’ve recently added a sax player to the lineup so that’s pretty cool. The songs are all very huge live, I think people enjoy the energy.

If someone only had time to listen to one of your songs after the festival, which one should it be — and why?

I currently only have one track released… my debut single Roses go stream it, you’ll love it. New music will be coming very soon.

How important are festivals like this for breaking through in the music industry today?

Invaluable, these are the opportunities that can change your life.

What’s next for you after The Great Escape — any releases, tours, or surprises on the horizon?

I will be releasing more music soon!!! I can’t say the details yet but it’s coming. So many good things are cooking.

Finally - complete the sentence: “The Great Escape is the perfect place to…”
