MARINA TABASSUM CREATES THIS YEAR’S SERPENTINE PAVILION

Fri 6 June – Sun 26 Oct

Serpentine South, London

The Serpentine Pavilion 2025, A Capsule in Time, designed by Bangladeshi architect and educator Marina Tabassum and her firm, Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA), is unveiled this month.

Tabassum’s Pavilion marks the 25th year of this pioneering commission and continues Dame Zaha Hadid’s ethos of pushing the boundaries of architecture. Celebrated for seeking to establish an architectural language that engages with place, climate, context, culture and history, Tabassum’s design will resonate with Serpentine South and aims to prompt a dialogue between the permanent and the ephemeral nature of the commission.

Inspired by the tradition of park-going and arched garden canopies that filter soft daylight through green foliage, the Pavilion is comprised of four wooden capsule forms with a translucent façade that diffuses and dapples light when infiltrating the space. Marking the first structure by Tabassum to be built entirely from wood, it also employs light as a way to enhance the qualities of the space.

In an era of increasing censorship, Tabassum expands on her desire for the Pavilion to function as a versatile space where visitors can come together and connect through conversations and the sharing of knowledge.

GET PUNK AT SXSW LONDON

Thurs 5 June (8:30pm)

Rich Mix cinema, London

Fri 6 June (2pm)

Curzon Hoxton, London

As London gets it’s own version of the famous arts festival SXSW, it enables director Yihwen Chen to showcase his acclaimed documentary, Queer As Punk. Queer Malay band Shh…Diam (amusingly named after the Malay expression for “shut up”) sing, shout, and riff about the realities of being trans and queer in modern Malaysia as they navigate relationships and their sense of belonging in the world pre and post-COVID.

Queer as Punk is a subversive portrayal of openly queer creatives in a country where same-sex relationships are still illegal, with director Yihwen Chen broaching urgent conversations around the importance of community and the unyielding power of creativity as a bridge - all with plenty of bizarre music lyrics, even more bizarre real stories, chroma key outfits, and a whole lot of charm.

HEAR SOMETHING EXQUISITE AT LEWES CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Thurs 13 – Sat 15 June

Venues across Lewes

Three days of events and concerts, in the intimate settings of Lewes’s St John sub Castro church, St Michael’s Church and Depot Cinema, welcome 14 of the most exciting chamber-musicians and soloists. The theme for this year’s festival is "Notes From a Small Island", and celebrates the rich legacy of chamber music by British composers, along with their influences from overseas. Artistic Director and violinist Beatrice Philips has created a programme of seven concerts curated around the seven movements of Adès’s 1994 masterpiece Arcadiana For String Quartet. Concert highlights include works by Benjamin Britten, William Walton, Ravel, Beethoven, Rebecca Clarke and Frank Bridge as well as a rare chance to hear performances of both the clarinet quintet and the piano quintet by Thomas Adès.

The Festival sees a return for star counter-tenor Iestyn Davies, who premieres a bespoke chamber arrangement of songs by Gerald Finzi in the Saturday night Gala Concert, as well as a little something in the Festival Finale. The Festival also features a late-night recital, serving local Breaky-Bottom wine; a coffee concert with home-made cakes and locally provided coffee and a lunchtime show as part of its schools’ scheme - when classes from local primary schools are invited along with their teachers to attend a concert especially curated for the occasion.

BATHE IN THE SHIMMERING SOUND OF AVAWAVES

Fri 6 June

Lexington, London

Weds 11 June

Komedia Studio, Brighton

Anna Phoebe and Aisling Brouwer, the international, contemporary virtuoso duo known as AVAWAVES, are performing a set of dates this month. It follows the release of their acclaimed third studio album, Heartbeat. A transportive and euphoric meeting of violin, piano and synth, it embraces a fusion of modern composition, ambient and electronic styles while incorporating the pair’s acclaimed soundtrack work. They wanted this album to feel raw, honest, and intuitive. It features themes of resilience, determination, grit and optimism in forever chasing the dawn after dark. It’s the bursting of bubbles and realising how much lighter everything feels without them.
