Such Brave Girls

Thurs 3 July

BBC Three / iPlayer

This was an award-winning sleeper hit when the first season dropped in 2023, but now almost everyone has fallen for its charms. Single mum Deb Johnson (Louise Brealey) and her adult daughters, Josie and Billie (real-life sister Sadler and Lizzie Davidson), are back for more crap life choices. Created by Kat Sadler and directed by Simon Bird, this smart black comedy unwaveringly looks at mental health struggles and dysfunctional relationships.

Josie’s quest to find herself unearths new depths of being annoying, Billie’s reckless pursuits of the heart lead to fresh chaos, and Deb’s desperate attempts for stability are dragged even further out of reach. If only the men in their lives— Seb, Dev, and Billie’s new flame Graham— weren’t destined to fail them spectacularly at every turn.

The Sandman

Thurs 3 July

Netflix

Season 2 Volume 1 promises one final adventure with The Endless, an unconventional family of seven cosmic beings, as we’re promised the return of Morpheus / Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Despair (Donna Preston), Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) and a few other familiar faces.

Morpheus is racing toward some kind of closure, as he confronts past mistakes. Folded into this is plenty of complications involving long-lost family and enemies from ages long forgotten. The story might be concluding, but there’s still plenty of thrills and emotion to come from this exceptionally constructed fantasy drama.

The Walking Dead: Dead City

Thurs 10 July

Sky Max / NOW

During the main story show of the Walking Dead franchise, many of us wondered what was happening in the big cities. The short answer is… nothing good. This critically-acclaimed spin-off of the successful zombie TV blockbuster saw core characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) heading to the Big Apple. Presumably to see the sights, take in a Broadway show and avoid getting eaten by a nightmarish horde of the undead.

The post-apocalyptic Manhattan was cut off from the mainland years ago - and has been imaginatively renamed The Isle Of The Dead. For season two, amidst a growing war for control of New York City, our two anti-heroes find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.

Foundation

Fri 11 July

Apple TV+

If you like your science fiction TV on a previously unimaginable scale, then season three of this Issac Asimov adaptation will delight you. Based on an award-winning series of novels, this landmark show chronicles a band of super-nerdy exiles on a monumental journey to save humanity.

It's 152 years since the last season’s climax. As the old Empire begins to crumble, the pragmatic, science-loving Foundation now controls the galaxy’s entire Outer Reach. The Cleonic Dynasty still rules over vast swathes of known space, but is increasingly being sidelined by its own Galactic Council. Against this background, there’s still room for plenty of politics and infighting, as a battle for the survival of human civilisation begins to heat up.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Thurs 17 July

Paramount+

Arguably, the best recent iteration of the popular sci-fi franchise continues the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike. Under his decisive stewardship, the crew of the USS Enterprise, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and Vulcan Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) are exploring the galaxy.

Last season saw our favourite Vulcan disobey orders and take the ship into disputed space, Number One facing a court-martial and some travelling through time to meet James T Kirk. Oh, and the Lower Decks cast threw off their animated form and guest-starred in the show, and there was even a musical episode. Don’t let the whimsy put you off, though.  With capsule episodes and a great sense of fun, this is first-classa stuff.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Weds 16 July

Prime Video

This multigenerational drama hinges on a love triangle between a young woman and two brothers. In the background is an ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer.

We’ve reached the end of Betty’s junior year at college. She’s looking forward to another summer with her soulmate, Jeremiah, in Cousins Beach, Massachusetts. Everything seems perfect until circumstances bring her first love Conrad back onto the scene. Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart. Summer will never be the same…

Untamed

Thurs 17 July

Netflix

Mixing a thousand square miles of spectacular scenery wirth a horrific murder, this new drama’s inherent juxtapositions might make it a ratings winner. A character-driven mystery-thriller, it follows Kyle Turner (played by Eric Bana), a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness.

The investigation of a young woman’s brutal death sends Inman on a collision course with dark secrets across the park and his own flawed character. With a moody neo-noir aesthetic, a stellar cast and haunting visuals, this might be one to keep an eye out for.

Acapulco

Weds 23 July

Apple TV+

With its perfect sense of 80s retro fun, this could be your nwxt binge. Maximo Gallardo’s dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime at Acapulco’s hottest resort, but he soon realizes that working there will be far more complicated than anyone imagined.

In season four, present-day Máximo (Derbez) works tirelessly to restore Las Colinas to its former glory before a grand reopening. Back in 1986, a competitor claims the number one spot in the annual ranking of Acapulco’s Best Hotel. So, young Máximo (Arrizon) will do whatever it takes to get back on top and secure Las Colinas’ future.
